List of Fellowships for Research Abroad (With a Focus on China Studies)

The fellowship-application season is fast approaching for many would-be dissertators. I decided to compile a list of some major awards to keep track of all the deadlines and requirements, and I’m putting it here for the benefit of others who might also be interested in these fellowships. One thing that I realized too late is that the deadlines of most Taiwan-based scholarships (and one Japanese scholarship) come much earlier than the US application season. If anyone is applying for the 2014 academic year, remember to start far ahead in the spring of 2013!

Some points to note:

  • This list includes fellowships for PhD candidates that support one or more years of research in Asia.
  • The list mostly covers awards that best fit my profile (Canadian citizen; Columbia student; specialization in Chinese history with comparative interests in Japan). I have not researched some obvious awards (such as FLAS and Fulbright) that are for US citizens only.
  • In cases when the fellowships have not been announced for the upcoming season, I have used dates listed for the previous application season.
  • The information contained in this page may include mistakes; please use at your own risk.
  • If anyone is willing to share information on other awards not already on this list (including those for US citizens), please provide the relevant information in the comments section, and I’ll try to add them.
